Pork is very useful in Chinese cuisine. This red Chinese pork recipe is sweet, delicious with a very unique and authentic touch.
2 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1 tablespoon salt
1 teaspoon Chinese five spice (available at the spice section or oriental alley at most supermarkets)
1 pound (454g) pork shoulder, cut to long pieces 1 inch (2.5cm) wide
1. Mix all the ingredients and marinade the pork for at least half an hour outside or preferable overnight in the fridge.
2. Heat the oven to 350F (180C) and bake for one hour on a tray, cast iron pan, or on a piece of aluminum foil.
3. When the dish is done, the pork should be reddish, firm and dry but not burned.
4. You can also cook the pork on the grill.
5. Carve and serve on top of the white rice.
My unwasteful “Twist” for this recipe: if you have leftovers, or sometimes I make double the amount in order to save some time the next day and make my Chinese inspired red pork salad.
