• I have a very simple food believe: if you buy any food, even the “healthiest” one like yogurt, cottage cheese, pasta sauces even organic foods (and not to mention processed foods) you have to read the ingredients part on the label. The easy guideline rules are: if you don’t know the ingredient, or you know the ingredient but it shouldn’t be in the product, my suggestion, switch to identical product from other brand that has less ingredients. The fun part about this way of shopping is the fact, that usually cheaper brand has fewer additives. That way, you get 2 benefits: you eat healthier food and spend less on your groceries (you’ll notice it very quickly in your grocery bill).
• Frozen foods are good for you and they are cheap! Sometimes even better than raw foods, especially vegetables and meats. Let me explain: most additives are added to make the food last longer and/or to look better. Natural food gets bad as the time goes by, so manufactures add chemicals to the food to keep it “fresh” and to make it look “pretty”. To prolong fresh produce life, manufactures harvesting produce while it still green. And by the time you buy it, it can take even several weeks. It means, that the amount of vitamins and nutrients is lower and lower each day. Frozen vegetables picked from the field when they are in their best and get frozen immediately. It means, that you have more nutrients in frozen peas, corn broccoli etc. So next time when you use frozen vegetables, don’t feel guilty that you don’t give the best choice to your kids, because in fact you do.
• Meats like sausages, loaded with additives that prolong shelf life of the product and keep them tasty and looking good. But when manufactures freeze the sausages, they don’t need to add as many additives. I even found frozen sausages that contain only meat and spices. The most important, that they were the cheapest kind.
• There is one more thing: home cooking is always the best and the healthiest way to prepare the food you're eating. The reason for that is that you're controlling how it's done and you know exactly what ingredients you put inside . So just start cooking your easy healthy recipes today!
